The Dialogue:

A: Hi, Will! How was the beach?
B: Don’t touch me! My skin hurts!
A: Really? But look at you, all tanned!
B: I’m not tanned. I’m sunburned.
A: Didn’t you wear sunscreen?
B: Believe me. I wore sunscreen, drank lots of water and avoided the sun during peak hours.
A: So why are you sunburned?
B: Read the sunscreen bottle.
A: Oh my Gosh, it’s expired since 2010!

Expand your Vocabulary:

Sunburn
Sunburn is inflamed, painful skin that feels hot to the touch. It often appears within a few hours of being in the sun too long. Here are some examples using that word:

He has a bad sunburn.
An hour in the sun sunburned me severely.
We got sunburned but didn’t realize it because of the breeze.

Tanned
Tanned, or suntanned, means having brown or darkened skin after exposure to the sun. Check out some examples:

He returned from his holiday looking relaxed and tanned.
He was tanned and muscular from working outdoors in the sun.
Do you enjoy tanning at the beach?

Sunscreen
A sunscreen is a cream that protects your skin from the sun’s rays, especially in hot weather.. Look at some examples using that word:

Make sure you apply sunscreen of at least 30 SPF to protect your skin.
If you’re going to the beach, you need sunscreen.
Re-apply your sunscreen every two hours.
