Welcome to another episode of Walk ‘n’ Talk! Today we are going to talk about a very important topic! It has to do with food, but it isn’t exactly about that. It is about food allergies or foods that people are allergic to, and it’s very important to know how to talk about this topic, especially if you have an allergy yourself. So, enjoy this lesson by Adam, teacher from Fluency Academy!

The Dialogue:

A: Hi Anne! Do you want to go with me to that new seafood restaurant?
B: I can’t, I’m allergic to seafood, remember?
A: Oh, sorry, I forgot! How about Mexican food?
B: Nah, I hate spicy food.
A: Ok. Let’s have a barbecue then!
B: Jenny, I’m a vegetarian!!
A: Oh, right. What if we just get some ice cream?
B: Sorry, I’m lactose intolerant.
A: Netflix and popcorn?
B: I can’t stand the smell of popcorn!
A: Annie, you’re really hard to please!

Expand your Vocabulary:

I’m allergic to
If you are allergic to something, you become ill or get a rash when you eat it, smell it, or touch it. We also use it as an expression to say we dislike someone or something very strongly. Here are some examples:

Some people are allergic to insects.

He’s allergic to most modern music. (He doesn’t like modern music)

Intolerance
Food intolerance occurs when the body has a chemical reaction to eating a particular food or drink and a food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a harmless food. Look at some examples:

How can I find out if I have a food intolerance?
Lactose intolerance is when your body can’t break down or digest lactose.
This product is gluten-free, making it safe to eat for people who have a gluten intolerance.

Can’t stand
This expression is used to say that you dislike someone or something very much or that you think that something is extremely unpleasant. Check out some examples:

I can’t stand people smoking around me when I’m eating.
My mom can’t stand washing the dishes.
I won’t be eating the caviar. I can’t stand the taste!

We hope you enjoyed the episode! Don’t forget that you can listen to it AGAIN and understand even MORE. By doing this, you will become much more familiar with the expressions from this dialogue and also practice pronouncing and expanding your vocabulary as much as possible. Talk to you later. Byeee!
